Green Sustainable Building
A Green or Sustainable building is an outcome of a design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use — energy, water, and materials — while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. Though green building is interpreted in many different ways, a common view is that they should be designed and operated to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:
- Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
- Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity
- Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation
A similar concept is natural building, which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally.
Ever since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development was signed during the 1992 Earth Summit, a lot of attention has been given to the importance of sustainable development. Four years after the Rio declaration, the International Organization for Standardization established ISO 1400 to address the operational standards that relate to the environment. The standard was updated in 2004 to meet the environmental challenges companies face in the 21st century. Compliance to the new standard is voluntary, but more companies have since applied for certification and invited their partners and vendors to do the same.
LEED is that it is an open and transparent process and is internationally recognised in a number of countries around the world, including China and India.
Individuals recognized for their knowledge of the LEED rating system are permitted to use the LEED Accredited Professional (AP) acronym after their name, indicating they have passed the accreditation exam.
BuildingPhysics have a LEED AP on their staff and are in a position to provide project management of LEED projects. Further, as engineers and building energy modellers we are in a position to provide complete solutions to many of the LEED credits, apart from just the usual LEED auditing process.
The USGBC community comprises more than 20,000 member companies and organizations, and more than 131,000 LEED Accredited Professionals. There are over 30 000 LEED accredited buildings and this represents the largest collection of green buildings in the world, and all of this knowledge is available to those who pursue LEED Certification.
